It's not often that the Slovak startup community gets to celebrate a successful acquisition. In 2023, only one such achievement was reported—the acquisition of Trustmatic.

Trustmatic, a fast-growing identity verification company, was acquired by Certn, a global leader in background screening and the second-fastest-growing startup in Canada, according to Deloitte. The aim of this acquisition is to expand Certn's identity verification services and solidify its position as a global leader in screening and identity verification technology.

On this occasion, we decided to organize a celebration accompanied by a panel discussion on the topic “Crafting World-Class Startups”.

During our conversation with the panelists, we delved into the latest trends and ideas shaping the world of world-class startups. They shared insights into the most challenging aspects of founding a company, the evolution of the Slovak startup ecosystem over the years, their approaches to growth and innovation, and their outlook for 2024 regarding fundraising in Slovakia and Czechia.

Donal Greene is founder and CEO of Trustmatic. With over 15 years of experience in business, Donal is a subject matter expert in biometrics and regularly delivers keynote speeches at global identity industry events. Passionate about sustainability, Donal is co-founder of Uroda Ventures, a Uganda-based agritech company focused on sustainable ginger production.

Andrew McLeod, CEO & Co-Founder of Certn

Andrew McLeod is the award-winning, CEO of Certn, a leading global data company that specializes in background checks. In addition to running one of the fastest-growing tech scale-ups in North America, he is also an angel investor. Andrew was a Forbes 30 Under 30 Nominee and Remote Tech CEO of the Year 2021.

Marek Križka, CEO at Sparring

Marek, an inspiring leader and innovator in the legal field, is a US Attorney and the CEO of Sparring, a law firm empowering technology companies. Under his leadership Sparring has grown to over 40 people and his unique approach earned him a coveted spot in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list.

Simon Sicko, Co-Founder of Pixel Federation

Simon Sicko is the co-founder of the Slovak company Pixel Federation - an independent game developer and publishing company. Simon has received several awards for his work in the field: Manager of the year 2016, Tech Entrepreneur of the year 2014. Pixel Federation was awarded the Diamond of the Slovak Industry Award 2015 and it was listed in Deloitte Technology Fast 50 CE 2015. Simon is also an investor in several Czech and Slovak Start-ups (Charged Monkey, Sufio, Matsuko, Finstat) and in the Neulogy Venture VC fund.
